Why need to Root Android Phone | Top 10 Reasons why

Written By Admin on Sunday, August 11, 2013 | 12:21 AM

Android is one of the most open, versatile, and customizable mobile operating systems out there. You may think you don't need to root your phone, but you'd be surprised at how much more you can accomplish with a little work. Here are 10 reasons rooting your phone is worth the hassle.

Why need to Root Android Phone | Top 10 Reasons why

10. Unlock Hidden Features and Install "Incompatible" Apps

Sometimes, even Android isn't open enough to give you some of the features you want. Either an app is blocked by carriers, hacks into Android's system files, or otherwise isn't available. Luckily, rooting can help with that: you can install carrier-blocked apps, get features from the latest version of Android, make incompatible apps compatible, power up your hardware, get features like Beats Audio from other phones, or emulate exclusive features like those on the Moto X. Whatever you want, rooting gives you the power to do a lot more.

9. Automate Everything

You've probably heard of Tasker, the awesome app that automates just about anything on your phone. You don't need to root your phone to use it, but if you're rooted, it can do a whole lot more. Certain tasks, like toggling 3G, GPS, changing CPU speed, turning the screen on, and others require root access. So, if you want to get the full benefit of an app like Tasker, you'll definitely want to root your phone. For more automation inspiration, check out your best Tasker actions, as well as our most recently featured Tasker tricks.

8. Boost Your Phone's Speed and Battery Life

You can do a lot of things to speed up your phone and boost its battery life without rooting, but with root—as always—you have even more power. For example, with an app like SetCPU you can overclock your phone for better performance, or underclock it for better battery life. You can also use an app like Greenify to automatically hibernate apps you aren't using—perfect for those apps that always want to run in the background when you're not looking.

7. Block Ads in Any App

Look, we of all people understand the need for occasional ads—it's how we make money. But ads can also get in the way and use up data. If you want to block ads in certain apps or on certain devices, rooting is by far the best way to do so. AdFree, AdBlock Plus, and Ad Away are all great options. Of course, if you aren't rooted, going into airplane mode works in a pinch too.

6. Back Up Your Phone for Seamless Transitions

When you move to a new Android device—or restore your device to stock for any reason—you can make your life a lot easier by backing up your apps and settings first. That way, you can get your entire setup back in just a few taps. If you aren't rooted, you can back up a few things like apps and data, but you won't necessarily be able to backup system apps and their data, or automate the entire process as well as Titanium Backup can. Check out our guide to Titanium Backup for more tips.

5. Remove Preinstalled Crapware

Titanium Backup is good for more than just backups, too. It can also uninstall that annoying, battery-draining, space-wasting crapware that comes preinstalled on so many phones these days—and, sadly, this feature is root-only. Freeze them first to make sure your phone operates normally without them, then delete them completely to free up that space. You'll be glad you did. Photo by Daniel Sancho.

4. Tweak the Dark Corners of Android

If you're the kind of person that likes to fiddle with every little feature—both on the surface and under the hood—rooting is for you. Whether you want to customize your keyboard layout with something like Keyboard Manager or give yourself faster scrolling, improved multitasking, and extra themes with Pimp My ROM, rooting gives you the power to tweak just about any corner you can think of. If you want to do it, chances are someone over on a forum like XDA has created a mini-app or tweak that will help.

3. Flash a Custom Kernel

Some of Android's most under-the-hood tweaks require a custom kernel, which you can only flash with a rooted device. The kernel is responsible for helping your apps communicate with the hardware of your phone, which means a custom kernel can give you better performance, battery life, and even extra features like Wi-Fi tethering (on unsupported phones), faster battery charging, and lots more. You can flash kernels manually or simplify the process with something like Kernel Manager.

2. Flash a Custom ROM

Okay, so you probably already know about this one—but it's one of the best benefits of rooting. A custom ROM is basically a custom version of Android, and it truly changes how you use your phone. Some merely bring a stock version of Android to non-stock phones, or later versions of Android to phones that don't have it yet. Some add a few handy features, some add lots of really unique features, and some change your operating system from head to toe. No matter what phone you have—even if it's a Nexus—we highly recommend checking out the custom ROMs out there. You won't be disappointed. Note: As some of you have noted, you don't actually need root access to flash a custom ROM—though you will need to unlock your bootloader (a process that sometimes comes bundled with root access). Still, it requires freeing your device from manufacturer lockdowns, so we've kept it in the list despite this technicality!

1. Truly Own Your Device

In the end, all of this boils down to one thing: you own your device, and you should be able to do with it as you please. Certain manufacturers and carriers try to keep that from happening, but with root access, you truly own your device and open yourself up to all the possibilities other parties try to block. Sure, there's some risk involved, and we don't usually recommend rooting other people's phones, but in the end, you can't put a price on true openness and control.

Gilas Pilipinas beats vs Korea | Fiba Asia 2013 World Cup Game Result

Written By Admin on Saturday, August 10, 2013 | 10:52 PM

MANILA, Philippines -- Gilas Pilipinas marched its way to the finals of the FIBA Asia Championship by beating South Korea, 86-79, in the semifinals.

The win assured the Filipinos an outright berth in the FIBA World Cup in Spain next year.

Gilas initially went for a 9-7 lead, before Korea's shooters started connecting to take the first quarter, 19-15.

Jason Castro came up with a string of plays to tie the game 19-all, but the Koreans quashed the rally to regain the lead, 28-21.

The first half ended 39-36 with the Koreans ahead.

The Nationals fought back early in the third as Castro's back-to-back baskets had Gilas surging, 42-39.

LA Tenorio and Ranidel de Ocampo kept the offense going for the Nationals to make it 56-48.

Japeth Aguilar's slam helped Gilas to extend the lead to 65-56 going into the final period.

Korea began hitting its shots again and came within three points, 67-64. Gilas momentarilly halted the run, but the Koreans came back and grabbed the lead 74-73, 4 minutes left.

Jimmy Alapag and De Ocampo allowed Gilas to take a one-point breather, 78-77, going into the final 2 minutes.

Successive triples from De Ocampo and Alapag eventually allowed Gilas to take the 86-79 win.

The victory also allowed the Philippines to vindicate its past heartbreaking losses to Korea, which foiled the country's campaigns in the 2002 Asian Games and the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship.

Gilas will face Iran in the FIBA Asia Championship title game Sunday.

Iran defeated Chinese Taipei, 79-60, in the other semifinal match.

Watch Coach Chot Reyes, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Marc Pingris at the postgame press con. Tears of joy from two of our heroes! Great job, guys!

Gretchen Barreto itinakwil ng pamilya? | I'm not part of Barrettos anymore

Written By Admin on Monday, August 5, 2013 | 5:19 PM

MANILA – Actress Gretchen Barretto was apparently irritated after she was asked to comment on the legal battles of her younger sister, Claudine.

Claudine recently filed for a temporary protection order against her estranged husband Raymart Santiago, with her legal counsel claiming that she was “abused.”

Speaking to reporters after the awarding ceremonies of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival on Sunday, Barretto reiterated that she does not intend to get involved in Claudine’s problems.

She also reminded the reporters that her mother Inday already disowned her in favor of Claudine.

“Itinakwil na po ako. So in other words, wala na kayong karapatan tanungin ako tungkol sa Barretto family dahil I’m not part of that family anymore. Right now, my family is Tony (her husband) and Dominique (her daughter), Marjorie and Jayjay (her siblings) and the rest of my siblings. Mahirap naman ipilit ang sarili ko sa mga ayaw sa akin,” she said.

Barretto also appealed that she and Marjorie be spared from issues that don’t concern them.

“Tahimik na rin po ang buhay ko. Kung nano-notice niyo naman po, puro career na lang at pamilya ko or anak ko ang pinagtutuunan ko ng pansin. Huwag na natin isali ako at si Marjorie sa mga gulong hindi naman na kami dapat kasali pa,” she said.

Barretto said she would rather focus on taking care of her "real" family .

“I think I learned the big lesson na lumayo na lang para walang gulo. Di ba kapag walang sinasabi, wala ng problema? Mahirap ang mga gulo-gulo, masaya na ang buhay natin,” she said.

When asked what she is praying for amid all the controversies, Barretto said: “Ang pinagdaanan ko hindi madali. 'Yung pang-iinsulto sa pagkatao ko, sa kredibilidad ko, napakasakit. Alam niyo iyon, hindi ko na kailangan sabihin iyon.”

“Bakit ba kailangan paulit-ulit tinatanong ang hindi dapat itanong? What for, para masaya kayo at bahala na ako? That’s not right. Pati prayers ko pakikialaman niyo? Bakit? Artista ako, that’s all I can give you,” she added.

Chito Miranda says sorry to Neri's Family

Miranda, 37, took to Instagram Saturday to say sorry for a “leaked private video of me and my girlfriend” and later tweeted to explain that his computer hard disk drive and “several other stuff” were stolen.
Later that day, the singer-songwriter posted on Instagram a photo of him and 27-year-old Naig on a beach, bearing the caption “Di n’yo kami matitinag.”

Flaks, calls for respect
The sex scandal draws mixed reactions.
INQUIRER.net reader Fulpol wonders: “What is the point of ‘video-ing’ your sex stunts with your lover? So you have performance parameters? Parang review ng basketball play. Hindi maganda ang performance kaya aayusin na ang performance next time. I don’t get it.”
Some fans came to their defense.
Al Christine  (@iamalchristine) tweets that Miranda “rocked with us through the years”, while Mike™ (@iamChanMichael) appeals to netizens not to “let one private video destroy Chito Miranda‘s legacy.”
“This should be a lesson for all of us, not an entertainment for perverts,” Mike™ adds.

In 2009, the Internet sizzled after a sex video of celebrity cosmetic surgeon Hayden Kho with actresses Katrina Halili and Maricar Reyes made the rounds on the web after the surgeon’s computer files were stolen. Kho would later be stripped of his professional license and slapped with lawsuits for illegally taking videos of his hot trysts.
Some web citizens simply poke fun at the scandal.
“Only Neri touches my Birdie,” tweets Boy Banatero (‏@BoyBanatero) in what seems to be a funny allusion to Parokya ni Edgar’s 1999 hit single “Don’t Touch My Birdie.”
Joey Kyle ‏(@kyleeismyname) posts a made up message of Kho to Miranda: “Been there, done that bro.”
For YouTube user PinoyCommercials096, the sex video is simply too lurid to handle. “Oh my God I can’t be in here. Oh my God…!!!!!!”
But INQUIRER.net reader Jaeger Meister shares many netizens’ dilemma: “Now, the million dollar question is: Where can I find this steamy video, huh?”

How to boost your globe tattoo broadband signal | Tutorial

Written By Admin on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 | 10:45 PM

What is the Default Network Setting of my Globe Tattoo Broadband?
Default setting is WCDMA Preferred. When in WCDMA Preferred, the USB dongle can shift between GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA signals

Should I adjust the default network setting of my Globe Tattoo Broadband?
If your Globe Tattoo Broadband consistently receives 3G signals, then you should adjust the default network setting to get better speeds and stability.

When should I adjust to this setting?
Make the adjustment only when you’re sure that your Globe Tattoo Broadband receives 3G signals.

What setting should I adjust for better broadband speeds and signal stability?
Adjust the Default Network Setting from “WCDMA Preferred” to “WCDMA Only.” When the Default Network Setting is in “WCDMA Only,” the dongle will only shift between 3G and HSDPA signals thus giving you better broadband speeds and signal stability.

How do you adjust Network settings?
Once the GUI is installed in your computer and launched, go to

TOOLS> OPTIONS> NETWORK> NETWORK TYPE,

choose WCDMA Only

Will I need to manually switch settings to look for a signal if I adjust from WCDMA Preferred to WCDMA Only?
Once you shift between settings, the dongle will automatically detect the available signals based on the setting you opted for.

On WCDMA Only, USB dongle defaults to 3G/HSDPA signals only.

On WCDMA preferred, USB dongle will search for either GPRS, EDGE, 3G or HSDPA. Whichever proves to be the strongest signal available in the area.

What is APN?
APN stand for Access Point Name

Why is the APN relevant to me?
Wrong APN Settings will not allow you to connect to the internet using your
Globe Tattoo Broadband.

Alvin Garcia aka 'Boy Pasay" Arrested for selling Globe Wimax

Written By Admin on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 | 11:17 PM

A series of entrapment operations recently conducted by police and Globe Telecom security personnel resulted in the arrest of three individuals involved in the illegal sale of WIMAX modems.

Arrested in the initial entrapment operation was Alvin Garcia, also known as Boy Pasay Wimax, a resident of Merville Km, 12 Access Road, Baranggay 20,1 Zone 20 in Pasay City. A follow-up operation at his residence led to the seizure of 4 Globe WIMAX modems, a computer set and around 100 pieces of Globe Sims, which are apparently used by the suspect to clone or reconfigure Sim cards for unlimited data surfing.

Police authorities also recovered from him his personal phone which showed various transactions of WIMAX selling activities confirming he is indeed Boy Pasay Wimax.

A follow-up operation after Garcia's arrest led to the apprehension of Ericson Cagara, a resident of Block 5 Lot 3 Phase 2 Topaz Street, Celina Homes, Camarin Caloocan City. He was arrested after he contacted Garcia with intention of buying hacked WIMAX modems. One unit was recovered from him.

A third entrapment operation led to the arrest of Sohayli Gagaso, a resident of Maharlika Village in Taguig. He had also sought a meeting with Garcia with intention of buying Globe WIMAX modems.

"We are relieved that the illegal sale of Globe WIMAX modems in Pasay City had been put to an end," said lawyer Froilan Castelo, Head of the Corporate and Legal Services Group.

"We would like to appeal to our subscribers to bring to our attention any suspicious offers that they may receive concerning the sale of supposed WIMAX modems," Castelo stressed, noting that certain criminal elements had utilized popular social media site Facebook in luring subscribers into this illegal activities.

Criminal charges against the suspects for violation of Republic Act 8484, also known as Access Device Act and PD 1612 Anti Fencing Law have already been filed in court, Castelo added.

Similar to other arrest made in the past, the modus operandi has been to pull-out the WIMAX modem from legitimate subscribers on pretext of an upgrade. The modems are then reconfigured and sold at a one-time cost payment.

Castelo emphasized that legitimate subscription of Globe products and services are available through Globe-authorized sellers and distributors as well as in numerous Globe Stores nationwide.

First of all is we have to make it sure that we are able to access or connect the Huawei BM622 4G WiMAX wireless broadband modem CPE by verifying through pinging the IP address 192.168.1.1 via CLI (command line interface) or thru web GUI (graphical user interface) on browser with same IP address at http://192.168.1.1 to make it realistic.

Whether or not the Huawei BM622 4G WiMAX wireless broadband modem CPE enable/disable its DHCP server we have also to verify our PC if we are using Dynamic or Static IP address to anticipate if the CPE device reboots failed to provide IP address or the PC itself can not acquire its IP address.

Static IP address is more preferable during TFTP firmware uploading operation to make it sure we are in the same IP address subnet and our PC is still connected even if the CPE device fail its DHCP server during power on.

To start with, the PC must be ON with the Static IP address above mention. Power off the CPE device Huawei BM622, unplug the AC/DC adapter then plug it again and remain the power is OFF.
1. Click START and RUN, then typecmdto open windows CLI (command line interface) mode
2. Typecd\to change directory i.g.C:\
3. Make sure yourbm622firmware2010.binis in local drive C:\
4. Typetftp –i 192.168.1.1 put bm622firmware2010.binas you can see from the screenshot below, wait DO NOT press enter yet until to do so.

5. Make sure or double check that the LAN cable is physically connected to the PC and to the CPE device Huawei BM622 port.
6. Using a pin or sharp item insert onto the pin hole and press the “Reset” button at the side of the CPE device Huawei BM622 as shown below snapshot.

7. Press the Power ON button of the Huawei BM622 while still pressing the "Reset" button.
8. Release the “Reset” button of the Huawei BM622 and press Enter to begin the TFTP firmware downgrade/upgrade.
9. Please wait for 1 (one) minute and reboot the modem.
10. Press “Reset” while BM622 is ON.
11. Open your browser type http://192.168.1.1 to verify or check if your firmware is already being uploaded, just do same procedure if it is unsuccessful. This tutorial is if you want to downgrade or upgrade your BM622 firmware via TFTP, this can be also applied to 4G WiMAX CPE Huawei model BM621, BM622i, BM625, and BM626.

How to Test Electrolytic Capacitor - Tutorial

Written By Admin on Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5:30 PM

The best way of testing a capacitor will depends to the type of capacitor you are going to test. Electrolytic capacitors that are leaky are not so common. You can take each capacitor out on the circuit and test it using a cap checker or using your VOM, but in-circuit testing of the capacitor is quicker and save a lot of time.

Do a visual observation and inspection to the capacitor and see if there are any electrolytic capacitor are bulging (they are leaky and commonly get hot), or physically leaking (corroded terminals). Next, if the unit will power up, search for indications of an open filter caps, hum bars in the display/picture, hum in audio, flickering displays, low B+ but nothing gets hot, etc.

If you have an noticeable fault, like a lowered vertical scan on a TV set or monitor for example, to locate the capacitor that is starting to open up, you can bridge each of them with another capacitor, one at a time and see if it fixes the problem. (Experience has taught me that bad electrolytics will not -usually- kill vertical sweep completely.) In a TV set that is several years old or more, there could be more than one cap dried out (open). Check them all.

As mentioned before, leaky caps are actually quite rare, but it does happen. Shorted tantalums and electrolytics capacitors in a power supplies can actually explode. Obviously, leaky caps must be taken out from the circuit to replace them for test reasons.

Most of the other types of small capacitors: mylar, disc ceramic, etc. are pretty rugged. It is rare indeed to find them bad. It happens just often enough to keep a tech humble. But I also encounters that this small caps are the culprit, and the problem is that they are get leaky.

iPhone 5S And 6 Release Date Rumors Show New Camera, New Features

Written By Admin on Sunday, June 9, 2013 | 10:48 PM

iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 release date rumors are pointing to a new camera and home button for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S rumors say the next generation iPhones will likely be launched during the autumn and summer, respectively. The Apple iPhone rumors say the iPhone 5S will start taking orders on June 20th and ship out in July.

Very few solid rumors regarding the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 have surfaced at this time. Apple is expected to upgrade to iOS 7 and add a faster processor, improved retina display, NFC support, 4G, 802.11ac wireless networking, and potentially a low-cost version of its popular iPhone line. Apple iPhone 6 and 5S rumors also say the iPhone 5S will incorporate fingerprint detection security measures since Apple purchased Authentec.

One thing known for certain is that the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 will feature iOS 7, which has an interface and new apps design described as ”black, white, and flat.” It’s been suggested there could be three variants of the new iPhones, nicknamed the iPhone 6 Mini, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 XL. The Apple iPhone trade-in program will also allow Apple fans to upgrade their current iPhone to the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6.

But iPhone 5S rumors showing components pictures have leaked out and they showcase improved cameras and a new iPhone home button using a capacitive touch area. The newer front-facing camera is expected to be at least 2 megapixels. A dual head vibration motor points to improved reactive feedback for the iPhone 5S.

Will you be buying an Apple iPhone 5S and iPhone 6?

Uploaders of Marjorie Barreto Nude pictures face jail

Written By Admin on Thursday, May 30, 2013 | 5:46 PM

MANILA - The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed on Thursday that it is investigating those who uploaded naked photos of actress Marjorie Barretto on the Internet.

NBI Cybercrime Division head agent Ronald Aguto said uploaders of Barretto’s naked photos could be charged with violation of Republic Act 9995 or the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009.

“Our objective is to find out who uploaded the pictures. In the law, it is not just the one who first uploaded. You could be the second, third or whatever, but as long as you upload on the Internet, you are liable,” he told radio dzMM.

Aguto said the NBI Cybercrime Division has received many complaints about individuals whose former partners posted sexy pictures or videos of them online.

Violators of the Anti-Voyeurism Law could face imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine of P500,000.

Barretto earlier confirmed that the woman in the sexy photos is her, adding that the leak of the photos which were taken years ago was meant to shame her.

HTC One Full Specs, features, price in the Philippines

As bumpy and controversial the ride may have been, the HTC One, a make-or-break smartphone for the Taiwan-based phone maker, has nonetheless reached Philippine shores. Officially (official), that is, following a not-just-for-media unveiling at one of Bonifacio Global City's swankiest addresses.

HTC's breadwinner is obviously no stranger to Android enthusiasts, largely because of its Apple-inspired, machined-aluminum housing. Of course, it helps that the One is widely regarded as the most beautiful and finely crafted unibody Android handset.

Its insides are downright desirable, too, boasting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset armed with a 1.7GHz quad-core processor; Adreno 320 graphics; and 2GB of RAM. At 32GB, internal storage should be plenty. However, take note that the HTC One does not carry microSD expansion.

HTC One

The screen measures 4.7 inches diagonally and uses an improved iteration of IPS-LCD technology. As is customary for signature phones, it is smothered by a sheet of scratch-resistant cover glass. Better still, it boasts 1080p resolution, resulting in the most pixel-dense panel (469ppi) we've laid eyes on.

Also on tap are the following: Android Jelly Bean, albeit hardly recognizable courtesy of HTC's Sense UI; 4- and 2.1-megapixel rear and front cameras; WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, and NFC modules; and Beats-enhanced front-facing integrated speakers.

The phone is powered by a 2,300mAh lithium-polymer battery, so it likely has enough juice to get you through a full day with normal usage.

The high-end HTC One will fetch an equally premium price of P32,990—P2,000 more than its fiercest Android flagship rival, Samsung's Galaxy S4, might we add—and is slated to go on sale on May 24.

HTC One specs:
  •     LTE
  •     Qualcomm APQ8064T Snapdragon 600 chipset
  •     Quad-core 1.7 GHz Krait 300 CPU
  •     Adreno 320 GPU
  •     2GB RAM
  •     32/64GB internal storage
  •     No memory-card slot
  •     4.7-inch Super LCD3 capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels, 469ppi pixel density, and Corning Gorilla Glass 2
  •     4-megapixel ("ultrapixel" in marketing speak) main camera with auto-focus and LED flash
  •     2.1-megapixel secondary camera that can shoot HD videos at 30fps, has HDR
  •     Beats Audio sound enhancement
  •     Infrared port
  •     Non-removable Li-Po 2300mAh battery

ASUS Fonepad

Next to smartphones, tablets—iPads and Android-based 7- to 8-inchers, in particular—are the rage these days. And why not? The tablet segment has become one of the darlings of mobile computing, with more major manufacturers trying to bridge the divide between laptops and tablets with hybrid devices. However, one thing most tablets lack is telephony—you know, voice-calling and text-messaging capabilities.

ASUS sees a burgeoning niche in the Philippines, where consumers are keen on using their tablet/phone mash-ups as phones, and so here we have the Intel-powered ASUS Fonepad. The 7-inch device is capable of doing what many people clamor for: running apps, browsing the Web, and watching videos, with the option of making calls and sending messages on a larger-than-smartphone form factor.

The Fonepad comes with a pretty reasonable P14,995 price tag and should be available in stores nationwide in "champagne gold" and "titanium gray" color schemes starting next week. Is it worth your consideration?

Our only gripe at this point is that it requires considerably more effort to slide out, especially on the first few tries. Then again, you'll hardly find yourself struggling to push the cover out, granted you're not keen on switching between carriers and memory cards.

A comparison of dimensions between the ASUS Fonepad and the ASUS-made Nexus 7 reveals that the two are nearly identical in size and weight, with the former being slightly shorter (196.4mm versus the Nexus 7's 198.5mm). Consequently, the Fonepad lends well to single-handed use despite its chunky bezels and thick, beveled sides.

Of course, its unnecessarily bloated hardware may be a sticking point for some, although products on the pudgy side are a norm in the Android scene.

Display

The ASUS Fonepad's IPS-LCD panel measures 7 inches diagonally, and its resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels on a 16:10 aspect ratio is on a par with what we've seen on the Google Nexus 7.

The resulting pixel density is 216ppi, and the clarity showcased here is enough to provide a decent movie watching experience. Photos and websites, likewise, boast natural and vivid colors, except that in some cases, blues seem to stand out more than other hues.

The 10-point multi-touch screen is covered by toughened, albeit reflective, glass, which is largely to blame for the Fonepad's modest sunlight legibility. That said, if you plan on using this hybrid for long stretches of time outdoors, make sure to do so where there's a lot of shade. However, viewing angles shouldn't be an issue because the screen offers decent views from most angles.

Should you feel that a bit of display tweaking is in order, you'd be pleased to know that ASUS bundles the Fonepad with Splendid. The app allows you to adjust saturation, hue, and color temperature, depending on your preference. There's also the so-called Vivid mode, which automatically boosts colors based on an ASUS-optimized profile, so no input is required.

Specs and performance

As already mentioned, the Fonepad wields an Intel SoC [system on chip], which is currently not the popular choice among chief players in the mobile world. And there's totally nothing wrong with that, as we'd soon find out. This ASUS is the first Intel Atom device we've thoroughly tested, and it does not disappoint.

The Intel Atom Z-Series silicon inside this gear is single-core, with a clock rate of 1.6GHz and Hyper-Threading technology, which enables the CPU core to perform two tasks simultaneously.

There's Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX540 graphics, 1GB of RAM, and a generous 32GB of storage onboard, which you can augment via microSD expansion for an extra 32GB of space, bringing the total to 64GB. Unsurprisingly, the tablet packs WiFi, 3G, and Bluetooth 3.0 radios as well.

Another highlight: The ASUS Fonepad has a Glonass-capable aGPS receiver, allowing for improved satellite signal detection and more precise tracking. We fired up Google Maps with GPS on and found that Glonass indeed delivers on its promises. The phone/tablet had no problems figuring out where we are, accurately at that, even indoors.

Hardware performance, for the most part, is top-notch. The Fonepad's Intel chip really shines in daily operation simply because almost everything happens rather quickly. For example, scrolling is noticeably silky-smooth, and transitions and animations occur with minimal hesitation. There's also a lag-free experience when flicking between home screens and jumping in and out of apps.

All these coming from a single-core SoC makes it all the more impressive.

With an aging PowerVR SGX 540 GPU in tow, it's expected that this Taiwan-bred tab-phone would deliver a modest gaming experience, and as such, casual games—the Temple Runs and Angry Birds of the Play store—should behave without jerks and stutters. In contrast, more graphically taxing titles like Dungeon Hunter 4 and Shadow Gun: Deadzone 2.0 will give the device a hard time.

It's worth pointing out that the ASUS Fonepad runs a moderately skinned Android Jelly Bean overlay that's mostly clean and pleasing to look at. Better yet, the cosmetic changes don't seem to have a negative effect on the user experience. In other words, ASUS' take on Jelly Bean doesn't slow down the machine a bit, something we can't say about many Android-based UIs we've come across.

Running benchmark tests resulted in mixed scores, as shown below. Vellamo Mobile, which evaluates browser performance, among other things, recurrently crashed on us, possibly because of incompatibilities with Intel's Atom architecture.

The ASUS Fonepad has a pair of cameras which are capable of video recording. One feels more obligatory than the other, though, meaning you probably won't use it much. The 1.2-megapixel front-facer is fine for selfies in bright sunlight and video chats, and nothing more, as images taken with the front cam have middling sharpness and colors.

The 3-megapixel rear shooter, in spite of its slightly great megapixel count, is far worse in comparison. We'll let the photos do the talking from here, which should only help to drive our points further home. Needless to say, photography is one of the Fonepad's compromises.

Call quality is excellent on both ends. Voice calls with or without a Bluetooth headset came out fairly loud. We didn't experience dropped calls during testing, too. One thing to note about the retail package, though: Oddly, and in a negative sense, the call-capable Fonepad does not come with its own headset.

ASUS' phone-tablet hybrid packs a 4,270mAh lithium-polymer battery, which is hardly standard fare for 7-inchers. It's quite nice, actually, topping out at about one and a half days of normal use. With power-saving mode on and 3G networks sparingly used, runtime could easily be extended for up to two full days.

In our looped-video battery-endurance test, the ASUS Fonepad averaged close to 10 hours---about an hour longer than the official video playback time for the device. That's at half brightness, with WiFi and app syncing on.

Verdict

So, what's our verdict? Well, if you've been keeping pace with us, you already know that the ASUS Fonepad is impressive. And it's not surprising; after all, ASUS is largely responsible for the value-for-money Google Nexus 7.

Because of its tempting tag price, finely crafted aluminum housing, and Hyper-Threading Intel processor which somehow manages to exceed expectations (and ultimately redefine our perception of single-core computing), this phone-tablet hybrid has earned our strong recommendation.

There are only two major drawbacks to the device. First, both cameras are subpar—even for tablets—lacking brightness, focus, and all the other good stuff quality shots are made of. Second, its gaming performance leaves a bit to be desired, as evidenced by the sluggish gameplay of some high-end games we've tested.

Again, this is to be expected on a device sporting an aging PowerVR SGX 540 graphics chip. But given that there aren't any similar nice tablets that can make calls and send/receive texts in this price range, it's easier to forgive the Fonepad's shortcomings.

All told, the ASUS Fonepad is a fantastic package. Make no mistake: it's a serious contender that should please would-be tablet, smartphone, and tab-phone shoppers alike.

PROS:

*Reasonable price tag
*Loud integrated speaker
*Premium appearance
*Decent screen
*Generous internal memory
*Top-notch hardware performance
*Accurate GPS tracking
*Excellent call quality
*Long battery life

CONS:

*Reflective glass
*Aging GPU
*Underwhelming cameras
*Lacks headset

Xbox One New Gaming Console

Written By Admin on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 | 8:33 AM

Microsoft on Tuesday unveiled its eagerly awaited new generation Xbox One videogame console, touting it as a home entertainment hub that goes far beyond games.

"Today, we put you at the center of a new generation in the living room," said Don Mattrick, head of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, unveiling the new version of the popular game console.

The beefed-up hardware is powered by software that allows for instant switching between games, television, and Internet browsing, according to Mattrick. Skype was also integrated for online video calls.

Kinect motion and sound sensing accessories accompanying the consoles will recognize users and respond instantly to commands spoken in more natural language, according to Microsoft executives.

"This is the beginning of a new generation of games and entertainment and a new generation of smart TV," said Microsoft entertainment unit executive Yusuf Mehdi.

Microsoft played to longtime Xbox fans with glimpses of blockbuster games including "Call of Duty Ghosts" and "FIFA" football being tailored for the new consoles.

A beloved "Halo" science fiction shooter franchise was used to showcase the merging of television and videogame play in Xbox One.

Famed filmmaker Steven Spielberg signed on to produce a live-action "Halo" television series in partnership with gamemaker 343 Studio.

"For me, the 'Halo' universe is an amazing opportunity to be at the intersection where technology and myth-making meet to create something really exciting," Spielberg said in a video snippet played during the press event at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

Xbox One consoles will be released later this year, according to Mattrick, who did not disclose pricing details.

Microsoft has sold some 77 million Xbox 360 consoles since they hit the market in late 2005. Console rival Sony has sold about the same number of PlayStation 3 consoles.

Meanwhile, Nintendo sold nearly 100 million Wii consoles, which became hits due to innovative motion-sensing controls after their debut in 2006. However, demand for Nintendo's recently released Wii U consoles have been disappointing.

Sony announced a new generation PlayStation 4 system in February but spoke ambiguously about the device, leaving much to the imagination.

Sony on Monday released a YouTube video teasing its plans to show off the PS4 in Los Angeles on June 10, the night before the annual video game conference E3 officially gets underway.

The PS4, which is also to hit the market by the end of this year, will succeed PlayStation 3 consoles that began their lifespan in late 2006.

"Microsoft wins the next-gen game console launch wars by launching something that the company doesn't even call a console," said Forrester analyst James McQuivey.

"Where first Nintendo offered us a tablet to accompany the millions we had already bought and Sony then offered us a box that we couldn't even see, Microsoft has trumped them both by delivering the Xbox One."

Microsoft has apparently put its hardware and software mastery to effective use, bringing game controllers, tablets, smartphones, voice, and gesture together in the Xbox One, according to the analyst.

"Microsoft takes an unlikely trophy home today -- it can claim to be the winner of the race to build the best living room user experience available," McQuivey said.

"Very un-Microsoft, to be honest, and a pleasure to see."

Ai Ai Delas Alas Break up

MANILA -- Comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas broke down on "The Buzz" on Sunday as she confirmed that she and her husband for a month, businessman Jed Salang, have already separated.

In an exclusive interview with host Boy Abunda, delas Alas revealed Salang physically abused her that made her decide to leave him last May 2.

Delas Alas said Salang changed since they got married in Las Vegas last April 3.

“Nung May 2, ang pinag-awayan talaga namin, gusto niya mag-monthsary kami sa casino. Ayaw ko na mag-casino siya kasi hindi naman healthy para sa kanya and hindi rin maganda para sa akin na nakikita ako sa casino. Sabi ko sa kanya doon na lang kami sa bahay or any hotel, huwag lang doon kasi may casino doon,” she said.

According to delas Alas, this disagreement prompted Salang to physically hurt her.

The Buzz" host Boy Abunda in the interview, which was taped early morning on Sunday.

Delas Alas said her decision to leave her husband was also prompted by confirmations of Salang's alleged real intentions in marrying her.

“Kasi mayroon siyang friend dati, siguro mga three months pa lang kami, siguro naawa siya sa akin or nakunsensya. Sinabi niya sa akin na may balak si Jed na papatulan lang ako and later on -- hindi ko masabi ang word pero kapag nagawa na niya iyon, iiwan na niya ako and may kakasamahin siyang iba,” she said.

“Noon ko nalaman iyon and ngayon ko na-confirm. Alam ko dahil from the very beginning ramdam ko naman iyon. Kaya lang natatakot ako sa totoo and natatakot ako dahil alam ko kapag nalaman ko 'yung totoo, sobrang sakit,” she added.

Delas Alas said she still loves Salang but it is not enough to compensate all the pain that he has caused her.

“Alam ko naman ide-deny lahat iyon pero alam ko kahit i-deny niya sa akin, sa buong mundo, hindi nila puwede i-deny sa [Diyos] iyon. Alam ni God kung anong pinagdaanan ko at alam niya kung anong ginawa niya sa akin,” she said.

Delas Alas also tearfully said she believes Salang never loved her.

“Sa lahat ng nalaman ko, tingin ko hindi. Kahit kailan hindi [niya ako minahal],” she said as she broke down in tears.

Delas Alas said she will leave it up to her lawyers to take all the legal steps, including a possible divorce.
